2014 Term 4 Science - the Material World

Welcome to the term 4 science page.

Here are our goals for this unit.

What should you be able to do by the end of the Science Unit?
Achievement Objectives Level 2

 Students should be able to:
       ● Group materials based on observable properties-e.g. hardness, flexibility, float/sinks
       ● Use words such as melt, solid, liquid, evaporate, dissolve, condensation
       ● Use simple technology to demonstrate and explain methods to prevent or promote changes
       ● Skills-measure liquids mL/use a thermometer/ record data on a table/draw graph

[1]  Group materials based on observable properties-e.g. hardness, flexibility, float/sinks

IALT:  Group materials based on observable properties

We used the following web resources to complete the activity below.

Transparent

Transparent materials do let light through (you can see through them).

Opaque

Opaque materials do not let any light through (you cannot see through them).

Waterproof

Waterproof materials do not let water through and do not soak up water.

Absorbent

Absorbent materials soak up water and let water pass through them.

Strong or weak
Strong materials are very difficult to break.
Weak materials break easily.

Flexible

Flexible materials are easy to bend.

Rigid /  hard
Rigid materials are difficult to bend.

Hard materials are difficult to scratch
