Maths

Kia Ora all

Today we had a good session of maths. We looked at PLACE value and FACE value of numbers, displaying our knowledge playing 'traffic lights' - ask your child to explain it.

2 dice game

Today we played the 2 dice game, which is an addition and subtraction activity, to get used to working on independent tasks when we are not with the teacher. It is an easy to make game that can be sketched on a piece of paper at home. All you need is paper, pen and 2 dice.

Mathletics

It is great to see so many students already close to or over 1000 points. We are aiming for all 22 students to get to 1000 points for the week.

Kia Ora all

Last Friday we all hopped on the bus and went to Jellie Park for a day of swim races and house challenges. One of the house challenges involved houses competing to see which was the quickest at recovering a range of items (tennis balls, kick boards, containers etc) from the pool.

Monday 18th February

Kia Ora all

Today we began our art attack.

We first looked at what a completed example would look like

We then looked at different ways to hold a pencil, and then had a go at sketching a draft of our own visual mihi.

We talked about using soft pencil lines so that we could erase any imperfections.

As our art piece includes a mountain, we watched a video of an artist showing how to sketch a mountain, and used this to have a go ourselves.

CONGRATULATIONS  to TR'E on receiving the Room 5 COMMUNITY award at the Kauri team assembly. Tr'e has been an excellent example of a student who demonstrates community qualities both inside and outside the classroom.

Well done, Tr'e - we are very proud of you.

Building RESILIENCE

Today (Friday) our focus was on RESILIENCE.

Being resilient will help us to be successful and enjoy ourselves.

Mr Forman started off by doing a leaning sit against the wall. He went for quite a while but then started going red and screwing up his nose. We encouraged him to keep going, and this inspired him to continue, even though he really wanted to stop.

We then had our own go at it. When we finished we talked about how we felt when we were struggling and wanted to give up.

We then watched a short video called 'Ormie the Pig'. It is about this pig who wants to get the cookies from on top of the fridge but had to try time after time in order to finally achieve his goal. In other words, Ormie showed RESILIENCE and never gave up.

We discussed how Ormie must have felt (frustrated, angry, annoyed, worried, sad, confused, like giving up) and we looked at how he overcome his problem. We noticed that he tried many different strategies, until he finally achieved his goal.

Card castle

Mr Forman then set a the challenge of creating a 2 level card castle. Even Mr Forman couldn't do it when he tried to show us how to do it.
So off we went, in pairs or threes.
We worked together, talked together, tried different strategies, got frustrated, looked at other students' castles to see if we could 'piggyback' their ideas, and gave it a good try.

It was frustrating; Mr Forman said it was a 'fail' situation. He wanted us to fail, he said, to see the different ways we cope and the strategies we use.

Here we are building our card castles.

Smiley and wet day games

Kia Ora all

Today Kendra received 'Smiley' at the start of the day. Smiley is our class mascot and is awarded to a student who role models the Room 5 high expectations. This entitled Kendra to have access to the couch, and to invite others to share it with her throughout the day. Kendra also became the class 2ic (2nd in charge) which involves helping Mr F.
At the end of the day, after students had shared how 'Kendra had filled their bucket', Kendra choose the next Smiley recipient - the criteria being, that this student had consistently demonstrated the Room 5 expectations throughout the day. It was actually a difficult task as there were so many to choose from.

Congratulations to Zoe, who will be 2ic on Friday.

So much for the warm summer weather. Today we had our first 'rainy lunch'. Our new wet day monitors, Melissa and Jacqueline from year 7, came over and looked after us.

Mr Forman talked about the activities we can do, and those we can't (still no teacher who thinks indoor tag and tackle is a good idea).

Melissa and Jacqueline shared their expectations of us, and we shared our expectations of them (be nice to us, don't yell, help us with stuff and play with us).

We had a great time, and here are some photos to show you what we did.

What makes our class a HAPPY and Good place to learn well?

Today we discussed and shared our ideas about what we want our class to be like so that we are HAPPY and so we can learn well.

Many students talked about being kind to others, being helpful, using manners, listening to others while art, sport, music, computer and games rated highly.

Perhaps the most popular quality was FUN.

Here are some photos of students sharing their thoughts.
