Kia Ora everyone.
I hope you are having a relaxing time during the holidays and having fun.
Our letters we sent back to England with Madame Winch should have arrived, and it is possible that your penfriends have already read your letters.
In case they have, and they also saw that we have a Room 5 blog - welcome to our friends from Kingswood Junior School. We really enjoyed reading your letters and our students were really excited to have the chance to write to you all the way over there in England.
We are on holiday at the moment but will resume school next Monday.
We look forward to receiving replies from you. Until then, take a look around our class blog. We will be adding much mor when school resumes.
NEW PAGE
Kia Ora room 5. I have started a new page OUT and ABOUT. There is nothing there at the moment but on this page we are going to put photos, stories and reports of the things you get up to outside of school. Perhaps you went fishing and caught a whopper? Great! We can add it to the page. Perhaps you had a birthday and did something really exciting that you want to share. Great! We can add that, too. The only condition is that you have to [a] write a few sentences about the event to add to the blog or, [b] you help me to write a few sentences.
Sounds like fun, you say? Great - get snapping away with the camera, ipod, ipad or whatever other technology that has been developed that takes photos - and don't forget to write a few sentences as well - you will need them.

Thursday 11th April
Kia Ora all
Today we had a visit from Madame Winch, the French teacher from England, with whose English School - Kingswood Junior - we are going to do a penfriend exchange.
She talked about what it was like at her school in England, and how the students there were SO EXCITED about receiving letters from Room 5 students.
We then shared our writing with a buddy and gave them some advice about how they could improve it. We aim to have our replies completed by next Thursday when Madame Winch comes along to collect them.
Conflict Resolution
Today reading group 3 and 4 became 'teachers' and discussed their Guide to Conflict Resolution with group 1 and 2. They did very well. We then had a discussion about YES/YES solutions, YES/NO solutions and NO/NO solutions. There were some very interesting examples shared by students.
We have had a desk change, we have literally changed the whole layout. We now have 4 'pods' of desks. Student feedback is that there is more room - I agree.

Monday 8th April
Kia Ora all
Today we kicked off with our first ' reading log regular checkup'. Each morning after roll we go back to our desks. We put our reading logs on our desk, open to the correct page. Mr Forman comes around with his 'smiley' stamp and stamps it if we have completed it. We then have about 8 minutes 'free choice' until he says ' see you on the mat in 30 seconds'.
If we haven't completed the reading log we have to do it then, which eats into our 'free time'. Mr Forman is convinced that this will 'support' us to ensure we complete our reading logs everyday.
Writing
Today we had a surprise. Mr Forman showed us a large envelope that had arrived from England. Inside it was a CD and lots of letters from Kingswood Junior School in England. We watched the short video clips - they want to be our PENFRIENDS.
Awesome !! - so we went back and wrote down some of the things about ourselves that we would like to write to them about.
Tomorrow we will read the letters from the students, and then inspired, go back and work on our own introduction letter.
We were thinking that we might even make a short video about our school to share with them.
Buddy Reading
Today we met with our buddy reading class - Room 19.
It was 'meet and greet' day so we spent our time introducing ourselves. We will choose buddies soon. Check out the photos below.

Wednesday 3rd April
Kia Ora all
Seems a bit strange starting school on a Wednesday, but we were quickly back into the swing of things.
Please note that because it is a short week there will be no weekly notice to go into the home learning book.
Oral Language
We started with a big oral language session where we shared what we got up to over the Easter break. Our focus for oral language was being able to speak for the set time, and the art of adding more detail so that you don't finish early. We rated ourselves and each other on our ability to add extra detail to make sure we could sustain our conversation.
Then Mr F shared a true story about two sheep who escaped from their paddock and found their way into a cave, only to find that over 200,000 Easter eggs were stored there. They were found, but not before they ate over 2000 of the eggs.
We then switched on our 'imagination' to answer the following question: "Where would you hide 250,000 Easter eggs?" - there were some very creative solutions.
Writing
Filled with ideas for writing we went back and did a 10 minute timed writing. For this we could write about anything we wanted. The aim is to 'just write'. After the 10 minutes we counted up the number of words and compared it to last time. Some students had doubled the number of words they wrote. Tumeke.
Tomorrow we will go back over it and 'edit' - make it better, and underline spelling words and use a dictionary to make corrections.
Reading
For reading - group 4 learned about noun endings. For example, they had the following sentence:
They went to the gallery to see the art ____________________
exhibit
We worked out that exhibit is a verb and it means to show / display something. To make this into a noun we add - ion, so we get exhibition.
Tomorrow they will continue with the rest of the activity, all by themselves and a trusty dictionary.
Group 2 and 3 met and we started looking at plural nouns. Plural means 'more that one'.
We say
1 cat , but 2 cats
We add -s to show that there are more than one.
That is pretty easy so we are going to look at when we add - es, when a y changes to an i and add -es, and when we have a word like calf, and that the f changes to a v and we add -es.
Then there are the ones like tooth and teeth, foot and feet.
As you can see there is plenty to learn.
PE
Today we had a big session outside. We have been working hard on developing our small ball skills. Today we did an activity where we tried to knock a target ( a cone) off a platform (ball container). We also practised adjusting our throw by trying to get the tennis ball to bounce into hula hoops that were set at different distances - easier than it looks.
